Electric supercar CMT-380 gets a turbine boost
Everybody seems to be coming up with electric supercars this years and Capstone Turbine have also entered this market with their CMT-380.
But this hybrid is different to all the other electric vehicles, Capstone have fitted a microturbine engine along with an electric generator.
This ultra-low emission jet engine can hit 60mph (100km/h) in just 3.9 seconds, it has a top speed of 150 mph (241km/h) and can travel more than 500 miles (800km) on a single tank of fuel.
Capstone microturbine enabled hybrid supercar features a Capstone C30 (30-kilowatt) microturbine that runs on diesel or biodiesel, which is housed inside a sleek Factory Five Racing GTM body. The Capstone C30 microturbine is so clean it does not require any exhaust after treatment to meet stringent clean air requirements of the California Air Resources Board or EPA 2010.
This concept car can be driven on battery power for a range of up to 80 miles. When the batteries reach a pre-determined state of discharge, the microturbine quietly fires up and recharges the batteries on the fly to extend the driving range up to 500 miles, similar to the set up used by the upcoming Chevrolet Volt.
The CMT-380 hybrid concept vehicle will be on display at this weeks 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show.
